New Outdoor Space

Our outdoor playtime will change a little starting on June 15th. Each class will have a designated play area outside. Ms. Ann & Ms. Ampy worked hard today to make a great Duck Pond play area! The Ducks will love it!

Our Classroom Is Ready for June 15th!

Ampy & Ann cleaned the Ducks classroom inside & out! Not only clean, but rearranged as well. Some toys have disappeared but some new toys have appeared!

Arts & Crafts:

Monday-Numbers with Dough: Supplies-any kind of playdough. Optional: number cookie cutters, magnets, or stamps. Any toy or everyday item you wanted to add to the dough would be wonderful.

Tuesday-Hand print Finger Count: Supplies-paper/cardstock, paint with a medium brush or large stamp pad. Thin pointed marker. Paint or stamp your Duck's hand(s). Place hand on paper. Once dry, count the painted fingers on the paper with your Duck. Label counted painted fingers with marker.

Wednesday-Sand Pan Numbers: Supplies-cake or any small pan available. Salt/Sugar/Sand/Flour-whatever you have on hand.  Put enough Salt/Sugar/Sand/Flour into pan just enough to cover bottom of pan. Assist your Duck on making numbers in the materials. Most toddlers just like to play in the materials. Watchout! Your Duck may dump the pan. All perfectly normal. Take this project outside to avoid household messes!

Thursday-Paper Plate Duck: Supplies-paper plate/or paper/cardboard circle. Glue/Glue stick. Yellow/orange paint washable paint. Yellow/Orange paper. Marker for details. Optional: googly eyes.  Have your Duck finger paint plate or paper circle. Let the plate/circle dry. Wash Duck's hands. Fold one piece of the yellow/orange paper in half. Trace Duck's hand onto folded paper. Cut out two paper hand prints. Attach and hand prints to plate. Use some of the scrap paper to cut out a small beak. Add beak to painted duck. Add eyes with marker or attach googly eyes.

Friday-1-5 Circle Caterpillar: Supplies. 1-White/light color paper/card stock for background. 1 While/light color paper/colored stock for Duck to color. Crayons/makers/dotters/etc.  Glue/glue stick. Marker for details.  Have you Duck color one of the sheets of paper/card stock. Cut several 5 medium size circles out of this sheet. Have you Duck glue and place circles onto the other plain sheet of paper/card stock. Add caterpillar details.

Again if you don't have the books on the lesson plan, use any counting type book at home! YouTube and other streaming services have many children's books available for a different change of pace!

The decline of play in preschoolers — and the rise in sensory issues

Another great article on play based learning and the importance of unstructured play from the "Washington Post".

ABC Review Themed Crafts:

Monday-ABC Stamping: Supplies-paper/cardstock. ABC Stamps. Inkpad or paints. If you don't have ABC stamps, you may create ABC stamps with bottle caps and foam stickers (Just peel of paper off sticker. Place sticker on top of bottle cap!) Stamp away!

Tuesday-Finger Paint ABC's: Supplies-paper/card stock/paper plate (we recommend a paper plate but not necessary if you don't have any available), paint. Ducks love finger painting! Show them with one finger how to make straight lines, circles, other shapes, and letters.  Too messy? Do this project outside!!!!

Wednesday-ABC Flour/Salt/Sugar/Sand Pan Trace: Supplies-cake pan/actually any small pan will do. Add a enough flour/salt/sugar/sand to bottom of pan to cover bottom. Like the finger painting activity let your Duck use their fingers to trace around the pan. Show them with one finger how to make straight lines, circles, other shapes, and letters.

Thursday-ABC Dough: Supplies-playdough/clay/homemade playdough (see an earlier blog entry for a recipe if needed), ABC cookie cutters if you have them! Have fun rolling, squeezing, smashing, shaping ABC letters with dough!

Friday-Sidewalk Chalk: Supplies-Sidewalk chalk and outdoor writing surfaces. Draw or write ABC's, shapes, lines, etc for your Duck to trace or color! Good outdoor activity! If it's raining, use dark color construction paper for some indoor sidewalk chalk fun!

** Don't expect your Duck to trace or write any of these letter, shapes, or lines. Most children at this age just color over what you just drew. That's normal! They're using those hand muscles! The art/craft activity purpose is to expose your Ducks to linguistics and to work the fine motor muscles/eye coordination. It's play! It's fun! Children learn and retain a concept faster if the concept in used in play activities! **

YouTube has some great videos that go with this week's lesson plan! Check out "Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom!", "C" is for Cookie,  & Dr. Seuss's ABC's! Check out virtual books through Loudoun County Public Libraries. Netflix & Amazon Prime (if you have a subscription) have great children's virtual books & stories as well!

Have a Great Week!!!
